Making Decisions
While we make simple and often insignificant decisions that require little thought (what we’ll eat; what we wear; how we’ll spend our evening), there are times where we need or want to make a decision that carries a lot of weight and can have significant ramifications (both good and bad): should we move?; can we buy a new car?; should I consider changing jobs?
When not being intentional, my knee jerk reaction is to operate out of my feelings and go with my gut. This has proven disastrous over the years, as my feelings are rarely a compass worth following. When my desire for that something (a job, a home, a car, etc) grows, my blindspots grow congruent to my ability to justify why I need that thing. I am just one decision away from disaster. This sermon titled, “Questions To Ask When Making Decisions” changed everything about the way we’ve made decisions since first hearing it in 2020. It encourages us to ask 6 questions before making any important decision, with the book of Proverbs as our guide:
WHO should speak into this decision? Who is impacted? (Proverbs 12:15, 15:22)
WHAT are the facts? (Proverbs 18:13)
WHEN do you need a decision? (Proverbs 19:2)
WHERE do the scriptures speak to this? (Proverbs 2:6, 3:5-6)
WHY do you want to? (Philippians 2:3, Proverbs 16:2)
HOW will God be glorified by this decision? (Proverbs 15:33)
